365 Days of 2013

I was wondering if I should still try to write a post relating to new year's resolution since 19 days have passed and everyone is over it. Hardly anyone is probably thinking about resolutions anymore, but on the other hand, it never hurts to write one for myself.

To be honest, I don't really have any specific aims or goals to fulfill every year. You see, sometimes when you set an objective, you limit yourself to a certain scope. Being able to focus on one thing is great, but it increases the probability of missing something else you could have achieved. This way of learning probably doesn't suit everyone, but I think it works pretty well for me so far.

2013 was a really exciting year, covering 18 countries in total, mostly in Europe. I tasted a lot of local cuisines from different parts of the world, and my favorites being Adona kebab I had in Istanbul, Turkey, and duck confit from Paris, France (it's hard to hate French food, really). I watched my first Broadway musical and my first live football game in Old Trafford, Manchester, for a big match between Arsenal and Man United. I flew on a hot-air balloon ride in Capadocia, Turkey, and saw a gorgeous landscape that seemed to be shaped by aliens. Wait, since when did I go to Turkey? Ah, yes, the stories are not up on this blog yet!

It's a pity that I didn't manage to post many of my travel journals here because I didn't really have the time to upload and sit down to write them, but I'm going to try to catch up before I start new travels this year *crossing fingers*

Aside from travelling, what made me satisfied with last year was the fact that I could still produce a number of songs with VOCALOID, a voice synthesizing software that replaces human voices with computer-produced sound. Well, they obtained the voice samples from real humans, but the end users are dealing with a program. I almost lost faith in learning how to produce songs because someone I know in real life was just telling me how pointless this song-writing act is, and that I probably had reached the plateau of my learning curve when it comes to musical skills. That I'm not cut for it.

But then, I have to thank my subscribers, my listeners, and everyone who commented on my songs saying that they like my songs. I have to thank the judges for CLAS:H theme song competition last year for choosing my song as a favourite-song award winner. Although I don't know most of you out there who support me, I want to let you know that you mean so much to me because you keep me going. So, let me use this opportunity to say it again to you:

Thank you.

And my thanks goes also to everyone around me who keeps me going: my parents, my brother, my friends, both in real life and in the online world, and my colleagues. It's definitely full of ups and downs, team meetings till midnight, cooking and eating dinner together, watching movies, partying, travelling together, misunderstandings, life drama, getting pissed off over nothing and getting happy over nothing... I was almost never bored last year. And I hope this year will be equally exciting, but with more smiles filling in my and your days :)

Double new year

Well, I'm utterly late but I hope everyone - celebrating or not - had a wonderful Christmas and a blissful Gregorian New year. In about two weeks I will be celebrating Chinese New Year, finally with my family after three years had passed.

I had been busy the moment I landed on my hometown because it was only 2 days before Christmas and I still had quite a few essays to worry about. With so much to unpack and organize, things were pretty hectic until this week.

Meanwhile, I had the opportunity to savor the dishes that I truly enjoy and definitely do not exist in the States (an I think that is probably why many Indonesian reataurants fail to thrive in the US and rarely anyone who isn't familiar with Indonesian food favors them over Malaysian or Thai food).

Well, I hope everything goes well for everyone, and stay in tune on this blog! :)

Home sweet home. Delicious.

Happy New Year!

Buon giorno!

It's still January and I'm still in the mood for new year. Happy new year to us all! I haven't been able to write anything on the blog for the past... month? Yeah, even thought it's winter break, I didn't have proper Internet access and I spent more of my time with my big family. Less time on the computer, woohoo! What a big improvement for me.

Yesterday I started cooking for the first time after 1 month of cooking dormancy (cuz it's winter break - I'm home and either my mum cooked for me or we dined out). I have no problem with sensing how much salt and pepper and other ingredients I should use other than the spicy Thai chili peppers.

So... I added to much chili peppers. They're not like jalapenos - they're nothing compared to these Thai peppers. It's super spicy.

I cooked this in the morning for breakfast. Guess what? I was wearing contacts (for the first time in my life), and I couldn't help but crying as I ate this lovely mom's-recipe-that can't-be-found-anywhere dish.

But it made my body warm afterwards, so I didn't feel so cold as I headed towards school. It's -7C right now and it's been snowing lightly for the past 2 days.

This is going to be my last semester as an undergraduate. I feel really sad for spending only 3 years as an undergraduate. I feel that my undergrad life is so far the best time in my life. I can take courses that I really like. Well, I still have to take other courses which I don't really like (anything related to biology or microbiology is disastrous for my tiny brain). I love anything related to chemistry, though ;)

Alright, it's not time to go to class yet but I'm already awake. I guess I'll try to make a bento today so I don't have to come back to my apartment during lunch break (> v <)

Annual New Year Party at Home

It can be tiring as hell, but it can be fun as hell as well.

I have never really helped my mum in the kitchen for any big family gathering at home years before. Well, this year, I did. And I just realized that preparing 9 or more types of dishes for 50 people at home can be really draining.

We called in an excellent Sate Padang cart that we used to buy from. My family's always a big fan of that Sate Padang.

I was so excited with eating it that I forgot to take a picture of the sate padang itself :P Talk about gluttony...

Well, next up is Padang food, my mum's special cooking.

From top to bottom: telor kari (egg curry), kentang balado (chilli potato), terong balado (chilli eggplant)

Pempek Palembang (fish cakes)

Indonesian birthday fried noodle (decorated with colored quail eggs, bengkuang, and carrots - I love decorating dishes!)

Jengkol kari (jengkol is a legume-like fruit that smells like horse crap and will make your urine smells like sewage water, but tastes good if you like it! Well, I'M A BIG FAN.)

Mini French crepe with beef rogut.

Acar bawang (home made shallot pickles)

A must-have dessert: es buah (longan, lychee, nata de coco, tropical cocktail fruits). We always have it every year!

I love arranging the plastic spoons! Wish I could do better :/

Bits and pieces of traditional Indionesian snacks. We didn't make them, of course. That would be an additional 2 days of pain in the ass. LOL. They're really good :)

Hmmm.. I kinda regretted posting so much food pictures today. Now I'm craving for those foods. Aahhh.

Happy (belated) New Year

First of all, happy belated new year! I've enjoyed myself too much during winter break (oh, the stress relief after final exam... that's really wonderful!).

I went back to Indonesia for a couple of weeks. Good foods.. yum.

There is something weird that I've noticed about my taste in foods. Indeed, a $30 3-way foie gras dish might drive me nuts, but for some reason, it can't beat the $0.30 cheap chocolate paste bread that I buy from a cheap family-run shop that I used to eat when I was little. Or the $1 bowl of meatball soup dish they sell on the road side, knowing that hygiene is definitely one big problem down there.

Foods that remind you of your childhood, or your hometown. Foods that give you warmth. I think that's the best food in the world.

I'm back in US, and it's really hard to reproduce the exact copy of those dishes. Ingredient-wise, and skill-wise. Time is not much of a problem for me - there is always time to indulge food, even if I have to sleep one hour less for that.

Well, here's one of my favorites: Nasi Langi.

It looks cheap indeed. I mean, it's only rice, cut-up fried egg, tempe, small cuts of beef, peanuts, fried potato pieces, fried onions, slices of cucumbers and kemangi leaves neatly placed on a banana leaf. Cheap ingredients - nothing like prime rib steak or duck confit. But hey... Nothing's better than home!
